Cultural HistoryPuerto Rican culture is characterized by a perfect amalgamation of indigenous and international influences. Some of the most commonly known influences include Taino, the island’s indigenous group, Spanish, who ruled the territory for centuries, African, which is a direct result of the slave trade and of course, North American. These can clearly be seen in the cuisine, music and literature that the island produces. Although Puerto Rico is now a United States territory, it thrives on its historical traditions. Puerto Rican culture is much like its people—passionate and vibrant, with a history filled with celebration.
